UK Cable, which collects data on the speed of internet connection in 200 countries, confirms that the Big Island has the fastest connection on the continent, while only 2.1% of its population has access to the Internet.
Although Madagascar is classified as one of the poorest countries in the world, the Big Island is not in terms of technology. UK Cable has just released its report on connection speed in 200 countries. To the surprise, Madagascar is ranked first in the continent and 22nd in the world, ahead of France, Great Britain, Russia, the United States and Canada. According to the report, the speed of broadband in Madagascar is 24.9 megabits per second, more than twice the world average. Apparently, its island position gives it a huge advantage.
“The key to the success of broadband in Madagascar is the 10,000-km East Africa or EASSY submarine cable system. This submarine fiber optic cable runs from Sudan to South Africa. This is the result of the agreement signed between the Telma operator Madagascar and Hong Kong Telecom in 2014, “the report said.
A very low connectivity rate
However, this advantage is not for the benefit of the entire Malagasy population. According to the Regulatory Authority for Communication Technology (ARTEC), only 2.1% of the population has access to the Internet. Geographical contrasts that make it difficult to install telecommunications towers are the main reason for this situation. The low rate of access to electricity (15%) and the lack of knowledge of the rural population (80% of the population of the Big Island) of technological advances are not left behind.
